State Rep. Tim Ginter (R-Salem) announces that during the legislative session yesterday, the Ohio House passed House Bill 164 by a vote of 87-3. Known as the Student Religious Liberties Act, sponsored by Ginter, the bill protects prayer and religious expression in public schools. Ginter spoke to the bill on the House floor.

“House Bill 164 protects the rights of students by ensuring a student enrolled in a public school may engage in religious expression in the same manner and to the same extent a student is permitted to engage in secular activities,” said Ginter.

The Student Religious Liberties Act had four committee hearings and gained over 60 cosponsors within both legislative chambers, and during the committee process, the body heard from a dozen proponents of the bill.

Additionally, the House concurred to several Senate amendments to the bill that addresses numerous issues including services to special needs students, online school bus driver training, teacher licensure provisions, and additional payments for school districts to offset budget reductions.

The amended version of House Bill 164 now goes to Governor Mike DeWine for his signature.
