Plummer backs bill supporting first responders

COLUMBUS – Legislation to support Ohio’s first responders diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder has been approved by the Ohio House of Representatives.

The measure was included in the Bureau of Workers’ Compensation budget, House Bill 80, approved Tuesday by the Ohio House.

Plummer, who spent 20 years in law enforcement, including 10 years as sheriff in Montgomery County, was among the backers of the legislation.

“I have seen firsthand the important, stressful and dangerous work these individuals do. The situations they find themselves in are not for the faint of heart,” Plummer said. “Our workers compensation system needs to support our first responders.”

Currently in Ohio, first responders diagnosed with PTSD are only eligible for workers’ compensation support if the PTSD is accompanied by a physical injury. House Bill 80 removes the requirement that there be a separate, physical injury. This change will allow peace officers, firefighters and EMTs to receive the support they need.

Plummer said the legislation recognizes the unique and stressful jobs of our first responders and the importance of what they do for the safety and welfare of our communities.

“This change is long overdue, and it’s the right thing to do,” Plummer said.

The measure now goes to the Ohio Senate for consideration.
