Roemer, West CPA Exams Legislation Moves Forward

Bill Roemer News

State Representatives Bill Roemer (R-Richfield) and Thomas West (D-Canton) announce that House Bill 442 passed out of the House Commerce and Labor Committee earlier today. The two representatives are joint sponsors of the legislation, which makes changes to allow students in Ohio to complete the Certified Public Accountancy (CPA) after 120 semester hours of the required 150 hours of coursework.

“At the time, I was able to sit for the CPA exam having completed 120 hours of undergraduate work taking numerous prescribed classes,” said Roemer. “I felt I was prepared to take the exam at that time and the results substantiated that decision. Many other students in Ohio are also prepared to take the exam after 120 hours, and should be afforded that opportunity, instead of being forced to send their test results to other states.”

Specifically, among the 120 semester hours they must complete to take the exam, this will include 30 hours of specified accounting classes and 24 hours of non-accounting business classes. Additionally, it will eliminate the existing penalty of requiring another year of experience for Ohio residents who start taking the exam earlier than current law allows.

“I’m happy to see our colleagues in the Commerce and Labor Committee move this commonsense legislation forward at a time when we need more CPAs in our workforce. HB 442 will accomplish that goal and give students greater flexibility by enacting this licensing reform,” said West.

The legislation had the support of 15 bipartisan cosponsors and awaits further consideration in the House.
